| Solenoids in Printing Equipment |
A manufacturer of printing equipment uses a solenoid as a spring loaded pin mechanism. The 1" STA® push solenoid has a push rod extending out the back of the solenoid mechanism. When the solenoid is energized, the push rod protrudes up through a table surface to help locate a printing plate to the precise registration location for printing. The solenoid is mounted onto a piece of aluminum hex bar stock which is machined to include a registration pin and a return spring.
The designer of the printing mechanism needed to ensure that the device would not degrade at temperature if the operator left it on for too long a period of time. He created a resettable temperature sensor which shuts down the operation of the heat generating solenoid if they are inadvertently left on. This alleviated the major problem encountered with the application of solenoids - lack of attention to the potential of heat to build up and degrade the performance of the actuator.
