Hospitals and nursing homes and pharmacies have concerns regarding accurately filling prescriptions. No one wants to give a patient the wrong dose of medicines. Automation has been developed to monitor and control drug distribution.
One example is an automated pill counter. A solenoid is used to open and close a gate through which tablets are passed. The machine's intelligence starts the pills flowing through a tube to the receptacle below. Once the sufficient quantity has been passed, the gate is closed. The solenoid is used to open and close the gate.
In institutions such as hospitals, a medication cart that looks like a card catalog stores all the medicines for the patients on one floor for the day. The computer that controls this medicine dispensing machine is programmed with the times of day and doses for each patients medicines. Each patient has a drawer in which their medicines are loaded. The drawer is locked by an open frame solenoid and can only be opened when the correct electronic code is keyed into the machine. Inside the drawer may be as many as 10 or 12 compartments, each holding one drug. The computer knows how often to let each compartment be opened. Each of these compartments is locked with a tubular solenoid.
This automation is intended to prevent mis-application or over application of medicines to patients.
