| Solenoids as Locking Mechanisms |
Solenoids are used as door locks in electronic trash compactors. Compactors are in the main dining area of fast food restaurants. As customers place trash into a receptacle, the door closes and the solenoid locks it closed. This is to allow the compression cycle to be performed with no interruption and with no harm to the customer.
The customer chose an open frame solenoid as cost is critical. When the solenoid is energized, the developing magnetic field attracts the plunger to the stator which disengages the door lock. When de-energized, the plunger is returned to the locked position via a spring. It remains locked during the trash compacting cycle.
