| Solenoids used in Date Storage and Retrieval |

A data storage equipment manufacturer needed to store and retrieve date from a bank of date storage disks. They also needed to select and transmit the data from the desired storage disk. As a result, they developed a disk storage library containing a juke box. The juke box contains a moveable head which removes the proper disk from its storage place and transports it to a disk drive. The disk drive then relays the information on the disk to a P.C. or other type computer system where it can be read, printed or copied.
The disk is picked up and removed from its storage area or the disk drive by a set of fingers on a movable head. The movable head carries the disk to the proper storage area or disk drive as commanded by the library's electronic controller and memory. The head then deposits the disk in the proper place and goes to a neutral position until it receives another set of commands.
The fingers are operated by a low profile solenoid. Power to the solenoid closes the spring-loaded fingers so that they can grip the desk. Removal of power to the solenoid causes the fingers to open.
A low profile was chosen for this application because of its compactness and force output. The movement required to open the fingers is only .030 of an inch. A high clamp force is needed on the fingers to insure that the disk is not dropped during the high speed travel from storage position to the disk drive and back to the storage position after it had been read.
